I first met Dwight at York High, at a time when he and his brother were struggling to stay together after the loss of their parents in an accident. We sang together in Mr. Witmer’s choir. We reconnected at the York 55th reunion, shortly after his loss of his beloved Annette. He spoke of his devotion to his daughters Maggie and Marcy. Since then we have been correspondents. I had so much looked forward to seeing him at the next class reunion. Dwight was a skilled and creative architect of words, both written and spoken. He seemed to have a near-ecstatic appreciation of details and their harmonious interaction. His Christmas letters were masterpieces. From our world’s perspective, it is never a good time to lose a precious friend; I have every confidence that in Dwight’s new world, at the building of the new heaven and new earth, his arrival will be right on time.

Thanks to Trish and others who published the 50th Reunion directory, I was able to re-connect with Marguerite in 2017 to share in mourning the passing of our mutual friend Barbara Bryan (Freeman).  In our ongoing email exchange we shared a sense of discovery on a wide range of subjects.  Marguerite was fully engaged in the amazing universe around her up to the end; her last email to me was on 5/24, sharing links to the Armenian composer Hovhaness in connection with Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day.

Her interest in cataloging and cross-referencing had her always on the lookout for connections in life, expressed in her salient, New York-tinted observations. Concerning the Library of Congress’  classification of undocumented immigrants:  “Aside from the PC issue, does anyone these days think of “aliens” as meaning anything but extraterrestrials?”  Re. extraterrestrials: “These visitors have been observing us for years, they know.”  On a book she was reading: “Too bad Lincoln wasn’t interested in music instead of drama, he might have lived longer.”

Marguerite seemed so involved, so at home in her skin, it never occurred to me that she could fly away.

Rest in Peace, dear friend.
